The War Spur trail in Pembroke, Virginia is a 2.7-mile loop through the scenic forests of Jefferson National Forest. At the top of the loop there is an optional overlook another .3 miles off to the left, the overlook is recommended as it is the main point of interest along the trail. This trail is not maintained by the state for a majority of the winter and spring months, which mean it can get a little harder to drive too in the winter. Being as high up and secluded as it is there is an abundance of animals including raccoons, foxes, bears, bobcats, deer, and rabbits. The trees along the trail are Tuliptree, Cucumbertree, Sugar and Red Maples, Yellow Buckeye, Shagbark Hickory, Northern Red Oak, Black Walnut, White Ash, White and American Basswoods and Sycamore. This offers a wide variety of things to look at if you are a tree enthusiast. 3 miles down the hill from the trail is the Mountain Lake Lodge, a very nice resort that offers skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing during the winter months. If you drive about a mile past the War Spur trail there is a second parking lot, where you can walk a very short distance to “Wind Rock”. Wind Rock is a large rock formation just off the AT, that offers a stunning view of the trees and surrounding trail.
