Roaring Run

Roaring Run Furnace is a furnace used for smelting iron in the 19th century, estimated to have been built in 1832.  It resides to this day in the middle of the woods in Jefferson National Forest.  The falls themselves form several natural water slides that tourists from all over frequent during the summer months.  This trail is very short and easy at about three quarters of a mile each way, and can be easily accessed by the whole family and pets.  The creek of Roaring Run is governmentally stocked trout waters open to the public for fishing.  There are dozens of wildflowers to observe throughout this trail the most notable being the pink lady’s slippers, gaywings, devil’s bit, wild ginger, snowy orchis and several species of violets.  It is owned and managed by the U.S. Forest Service who comes through for annual maintenance and to ensure trail safety.  Keep in mind that while this is a decently laid back hike there are five footbridges that you must cross in order to reach the falls, all of which have about to steps to get up to and down from.
