Angel's Rest

4.6 mi.

The Angel's Rest trail is a 4.6 mile hike that has an elevation gain of 1600' that leads to two overlooks of the New River and is located off the Appalachian Trail.  This trail is moderately difficult as it involves steep switchbacks in order to reach the top; don't be daunted by this though as it is doable by most everyone.  Angel's Rest itself is a large boulder overlooking the New River and Pearis Mountain.  From the main trail's intersection with the AT if you continue .6 miles off down the AT you will reach the Wilburn Valley Overlook which has a better view and more space to spread out, but requires hiking further.  Throughout this trail you will encounter many wildflowers such as Mountain Laurel, Rhododendron, and Azalea's along with some low-growing ferns.  Watch your step and keep an eye out for foxes, raccoons, deer, crows, snakes, squirrels, and a slew of larger insects such as millipedes, praying mantis, and wasps.  PC: TwoKnobbyTires
