Tinker Cliffs

7.7 mi.

The Andy Layne Trail which leads to the Tinker Cliffs, is an extremely difficult hike that leads to beautiful views of the Catawba Valley and is the third stop of the Virginia Triple Crown.  With an elevation gain of 2,980' it is one of the harder, more vertical trails in Virginia and is not recommended for pets or small children.  The trail starts at a small parking lot and weaves through some nearby cow pastures and two streams before joining the AT and from there it follows the AT all the way to the Tinker Cliffs located at the top of Tinker Mountain.  This trail follows mostly through the forest boasts very few wildflowers, mostly shrub type plants and a wide variety of trees, mostly Hemlock, to observe.  When you reach the top the temperature will drop considerably so bring a jacket if you plan to be up there for more than 15 minutes, also be careful of the strong winds and don't leave belongings unattended.
